Hound Association of Scotland Open Show 2014 Critique

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge and to the competitors for bringing along some lovely hounds for me to go over.

Deerhound Junior (4,0)

1st Cunningham – Chuilinn Ballad – BP & BPIS
Very feminine with everything in the right place at this tender age. Great bone and substance.
Lovely dark eye. Balanced and moved well with drive and extension for one so young. Very very promising. Delighted to see her go BPIS. Well deserved.

2nd McIntyre – Almondbank Lead On McDuff
Unfortunate to meet 1 as he is a very nice youngster. Going through the awkward juvenile stage at the moment. Masculine head with dark eye and correct ears. Balanced angulation.Enough forechest with brisket still to fill. Moved truly from all directions.

3rd Burns – Isdemus Prince Sense of Beauty

4th Gillie – Dorrator Garvey

Deerhound Post Graduate (4,0)

Bit of a mixed class of different types. Preferred fronts on some and back ends on others, so
overall balance was difficult to find.

1st Constantine – Gentiehun Ayres Rock of Kaleginy
Good topline and correct tuck up. Held his topline on the move. Well knuckled feet. In muscular
condition. Well presented. Skull a little round for me.

2nd McIntyre – Hillmorton Hazel
Feminine with sufficient bone for size. Harsh coat. Good feet. Tended to flatten her topline a
little on the move.

3rd Foote & Crossan – Cusidh Eilidh

4th McKinnon – Moireach Osprey of Fingon

Deerhound Limit (4,0) A nice class.

1st Constantine – Gentiehun Adelaide of Kaleginy BOB – Nice to see her shortlisted for BIS. Feminine bitch with lovely curvy outline. Not the biggest, but in proportion. No exaggerations.
Hard condition. Balanced angulation front and rear. Nice topline, correct tuck up. Good width of
quarters and second thigh. Moved with reach and drive. Well presented and nicely handled.

2nd MacBean – Killoeter Ralia
Bigger bitch all round but still very feminine. A year younger than 1 and showing her immaturity on the day. Excels in hind quarters. Beautiful head, eye and ear. Unfortunate to meet the winner
today.

3rd Foote & Crossan – Fintralgor Red Red Rose

4th Davis & MacIntyre

Deerhound Open (4,1)
Three totally different types with something to like about all of them.

1st Anderson & White– Gentiehun Desert Orchid
All male and fully mature giving him the edge on the day.Hound with plenty of substance and in hard condition. Nice length of loin. Well angulated both ends presenting a pleasing and curvy outline. Very well presented and handled. Good width of second thigh, just moved a little close behind today to miss out on top honours.

2nd MacBean – Killoeter Ruaig
Again all male and much to commend. A hound I have admired from the ringside, but unfortunately at an awkward stage in his development being 2 years old and at an age where his overall balance is changing. Looking forward to seeing him when mature. Obviously not liking the floor so did not co- operate well with his handler.

3rd Constantine – Gentiehun Tulip of Kaleginy

Judge – A Morton (Cotherstone)

Hound Association of Scotland B.P.I.S.

Cunninghams Chuilinn Ballad (Deerhound)

A super line up of puppies of which I picked this 8 month old bitch who really stood out. So well constructed, lovely feminine head with aqualine nose and far-away, soft expression and good pigmentation. For the young giant breed she is so well balanced and sound in movement, at which she excels, with a long stride, covering a lot of ground. Excellent forechest and feet. To put up your own breed it has to be a very good one and this one is just that, pure quality  and I loved her - one to watch for the future.
